A Master Regulator of Cardiovascular Disease?

چکیده

Finding the mechanism that will make us live a long and healthy life is the goal of medical research. How appropriate that Klotho, the Greek goddess of life, is involved in vascular disease. Klotho is one of the Greek Moirai, the goddesses of fate who controlled the ultimate destiny of man: death. Klotho spins the thread of life, Lakhesis measured the thread of life, and Atropos cut the thread of life. For this reason, the gene that seemed to control aging was named Klotho when first discovered by Kuro-o et al in 1997.1 This klotho knockout aging mouse suffered from early demise, infertility, arteriosclerosis and arterial calcification, osteoporosis, hyperphosphatemia, emphysema, and skin atrophy. This landmark discovery has not (yet) extended our life span, but it has opened up an amazing understanding of the role of Klotho and mineral homeostasis in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease.

A Key Regulator of Cardiovascular Lineage Commitment

In mammals, the heart arises from the differentiation of 2 sources of multipotent cardiovascular progenitors (MCPs). Different studies indicated that an evolutionary conserved transcriptional regulatory network controls cardiovascular development from flies to humans. Whereas in Drosophila, Tinman acts as a master regulator of cardiac development, the identification of such a master regulator i...

The role of Nrf2 in the attenuation of cardiovascular disease.

Oxidative stress is a component of many human diseases, including cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Exercise and various phytochemicals activate nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 (Nrf2), the master regulator of antioxidant defenses, and attenuate CVD. This review highlights Nrf2 regulation by exercise and phytochemicals and the role of Nrf2 as a therapeutic target in CVD.

The Situation of New Risk Factors of Cardiovascular Disease in Urban Population of Isfahan

During recent years, many epidemiological studies on risk factors of cardiovascular disease (CVD) have been preformed among which are fibrinogen, activity of factor VII, lipoprotein (a), and hemocystein as new CVD risk factors. Through completed studies, it is found that in urban population of Isfahan more than one risk factor (hypertension, smoking, hypercholesterolemia, diabetes and obesity) ...

Possible role for HIF-1β/ARNT in the regulation of vascular function in diabetes and cardiovascular disease

Aryl hydrocarbon receptor nuclear translocator (ARNT), also known as hypoxia-inducible factor-1 beta (HIF-1β), is a transcription factor that functions as a master regulator of glucose homeostasis. We have previously demonstrated that ARNT expression is highest in the heart, where it is required for maintaining normal cardiac metabolism and cardiac function. Diabetes is associated with a loss o...

The effect of resistance training on the expression of cardiac muscle growth regulator messenger genes in obese male rats

Background: Obesity is associated with cardiovascular disease, followed by pathological cardiac hypertrophy. However, physical activity (resistance training) plays a role in modulating some of the intracellular messenger pathways associated with the regulation of pathologic hypertrophy. The aim of this study was to investigate The effect of resistance training on the expression of cardiac muscl...
